Be fearless.

The future looks bright for SMS grads. We live in big cities and small towns both here and abroad. (One of us even lives and works on an organic farm!) We get undergraduate degrees at colleges and universities like UVA, Fordham, RISD, Parsons, Case Western Reserve, Virginia Tech and NYU, and study everything from economics, gastronomy, pre-med/vet, education and English. We get graduate degrees in disciplines like law, medicine, accounting, social work, financial planning, engineering and environmental science from schools like JMU, Columbia, VCU, Johns Hopkins and Washington and Lee.

While our career and life choices are unique, we share the opinion that we wouldn't be where we are today without the confidence, determination and life skills we learned at SMS. Here's a small group of alumnae whose accomplishments will give you an idea of what you can do with an SMS education.

Fay Lohr '62
President/CEO, FeedMore, Inc.

Fay Lohr is the head of FeedMore, a large organization that provides nutritious food for people in need across Central Virginia. Fay not only heads up the organization, she helped form it by steering three nonprofits to join forces with FeedMore to more efficiently and effectively serve people in need; the Central Virginia Food Bank, Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia, and the Community Kitchen.

Fay attributes her career path and her success to the values and life lessons she learned at St. Margaret's, in particular, the commitment we make to serving others.

Brooke Trible Weinmann '75
Founder, Atlanta Girls' School

In the late 1990s, Brooke found herself living in an area where there were no girls' schools. She wanted to offer future generations of girls an experience similar to the one she had at St. Margaret's, so she worked tirelessly with the community, government, fundraisers and staff to open the Atlanta Girls' School in August 2000. At first, the school only offered grades six through nine, but not long after, because of Brooke's commitment to the benefits of a single-sex education, the school increased its offering to grades six through twelve.

Masha Skuratovskaya '94
Founder, Chair of the Board, Ikirwa School Trust, Midawe, Republic of Tanzania
Fixed Income Portfolio Manager, Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation

Masha has spent most of her career as an institutional fixed income portfolio manager with organizations like Freddie Mac, the World Bank and, since September 2011, the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation. But like most SMS graduates, she wanted to not only do well, but to do good.

She loves to travel. On a recent trip to Tanzania, she struck up a conversation with her tour guide. One thing led to another and the idea of building the Ikirwa School was born. Masha and her team are currently working hard to bring this dream to life; to give local children from the village of Midawe access to English-language education in order to improve their future academic and employment opportunities. As if that weren't enough, in addition to her tireless efforts to get the development of the school off the ground, Masha is personally funding the first phase of the school's construction.

Elizabeth Dodson Giles '95
Owner, The Cooks Alley

Are you noticing a trend here yet? St. Margaret's women are strong, independent, smart AND entrepreneurial. Some of us work in the public, private, corporate, and non-profit worlds, and some of us start our own businesses. Like Elizabeth Dodson Giles, who founded a catering business in 2003, in a quaint little house in Lynchburg, Virginia. Business has been so good, she's recently relocated to a larger space. If you're ever in the area, be sure to stop by. We think she makes the best jams, jellies and baked goods on the east coast!
